WhatsApp OTP: A Cheaper, Higher-Delivery Alternative to SMS

Send login and transaction OTPs over WhatsApp: authentication templates, copy-code buttons, delivery rates, costs and a safe SMS fallback design.

OTP Authentication Security

SMS OTPs in India suffer from DLT template friction, operator delays and spam filters. WhatsApp authentication templates deliver instantly, show read receipts, and cost less per successful login.

How WhatsApp OTP works

You create an authentication category template with a one-time-password component. Meta renders it with a Copy Code button (or a one-tap autofill button on Android apps). The code itself is the template variable.

Example rendered message:

123456 is your verification code. For your security, do not share this code.

Rules you must follow

  • Authentication templates cannot include marketing text, emojis or extra links.
  • Code validity should be stated and enforced (5–10 minutes is standard).
  • One template per language; do not build separate templates per product line.
  • Rate-limit per number: a maximum of 3–5 sends in 15 minutes stops abuse and protects quality rating.

Designing the fallback

Never make WhatsApp your only OTP path. A resilient design:

  1. Send over WhatsApp first.
  2. If no delivered webhook arrives in 20–30 seconds, fire SMS.
  3. Offer a visible "Get code on SMS" link after 30 seconds.
  4. Log which channel succeeded so you can measure real delivery, not vendor claims.

What improves after switching

  • Delivery visibility — you get delivered and read receipts, which SMS gateways rarely provide honestly.
  • Cost — authentication is the cheapest template category.
  • Support load — "I didn't get the OTP" tickets drop because users can see the message thread.

Security notes

  • Generate codes server-side with a CSPRNG; never derive them from user data.
  • Store only a hash of the code with an expiry.
  • Invalidate the code on first successful use.
  • Alert on unusual OTP volume per IP or per device fingerprint.

Ship WhatsApp OTP behind a feature flag for 10% of logins, compare completion rate against SMS for a week, then roll forward.
