WhatsApp API Pricing in India: What You Actually Pay Per Message
Marketing, utility, authentication and service message pricing explained with worked examples, free entry points and cost-control tactics.
Meta charges per message, by category, by country. Everything else — your platform subscription — sits on top. Here is how to model the real number before you commit budget.
The four categories
- Marketing — offers, launches, re-engagement. Most expensive.
- Utility — order, payment, delivery, booking, account updates. Roughly a third of marketing cost.
- Authentication — OTPs and login codes. Cheapest template category.
- Service — your replies inside the 24-hour window after a customer messages you. Free.
Why the service window matters more than the rate card
Every time a customer messages you first, you get 24 hours of free two-way conversation. A "Click to WhatsApp" ad or a website widget therefore converts paid traffic into free messaging. Businesses that build inbound flows spend a fraction of what pure-broadcast businesses spend.
Worked example: a D2C store, 10,000 orders a month
| Flow | Volume | Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order confirmation | 10,000 | Utility | Replaces transactional SMS |
| Shipping + delivery | 20,000 | Utility | Two touches per order |
| COD confirmation | 3,000 | Utility | Cuts RTO meaningfully |
| Abandoned cart | 6,000 | Marketing | Highest revenue per message |
| Festive campaign | 15,000 | Marketing | Segmented, not blasted |
The utility block is your operating cost; the marketing block is your growth budget. Track them separately or you will never know your true CAC on the channel.
Five ways to cut spend without cutting reach
- Use utility templates where they genuinely apply. Never dress marketing as utility — Meta re-categorises and you pay marketing rates anyway plus a quality hit.
- Segment before you send. Sending to 8,000 engaged contacts beats 40,000 cold ones on both cost and quality rating.
- End conversations inside the free window. If a customer replies, answer everything then — don't restart a paid conversation tomorrow.
- Use buttons instead of follow-ups. Quick-reply buttons collect the answer in one message instead of three.
- Watch failed messages. Invalid numbers still consume campaign slots and skew your reporting; clean the list monthly.
What to ask any provider
- Is the Meta cost passed through at cost, or marked up per message?
- Are inbound/service conversations charged?
- Are there per-agent, per-contact or per-template caps?
- Do you get the raw delivery, read and failure logs for reconciliation?
Model cost per outcome, not cost per message. On WhatsApp the read rates are high enough that a slightly pricier category often wins on ROI.
