WhatsApp Abandoned Cart Recovery: The Three-Message Sequence
Timing, copy, incentives and guardrails for recovering carts on WhatsApp — plus how to measure incremental revenue honestly.
Cart abandonment emails get opened hours later. WhatsApp gets read in minutes — which is exactly when the intent is still alive.
The sequence
Message 1 — 45 to 60 minutes after abandonment (marketing template) "Hi {{1}}, you left {{2}} in your cart. It's still reserved — tap below to complete your order." Button: Complete order (deep link back to the cart)
Message 2 — 24 hours later, only if no purchase Add proof, not discount: rating, return policy, delivery estimate. "Hi {{1}}, {{2}} is rated 4.6★ by 1,200+ buyers and ships in 2 days. Still interested?" Buttons: Buy now · Ask a question
Message 3 — 72 hours later, final touch Now an incentive if margins allow — free shipping beats a percentage discount for most baskets.
Stop after three. A fourth message costs money and quality rating.
Copy rules
- Name the product, not "your cart".
- One call to action per message.
- Never fake urgency you cannot honour ("2 left in stock" when you have 400).
- Offer a question button — many abandonments are doubts, not price objections.
Guardrails
- Only message contacts with a stored opt-in.
- Suppress anyone who purchased, replied STOP, or received another campaign in the last 48 hours.
- Cap total marketing messages per contact per week.
Measuring honestly
Do not claim every recovered cart as incremental. Hold out 10% of eligible carts as a control group and compare purchase rates. The delta is your real lift. Report revenue per 1,000 messages sent, so the finance team can compare it to every other channel.
What to do with replies
Half the replies will be questions about size, delivery or COD. Route them to a human within minutes — this is the highest-converting inbox queue in the entire business, and it is free to answer inside the 24-hour window.
